There are a number of options that can replace your missing teeth, including dental bridges and partial dentures. Each of these options can incorporate dental implants. During a consultation at Chrisman & Wyse Cosmetic & General Dentistry, your doctor will present you with all the options available and thoroughly examine your the state of your oral health to determine the right restorative device for you.
What is a Partial Denture?
When patients have experienced multiple tooth loss due to decay or disease, a restorative device⏤such as a partial denture⏤is necessary to help restore your smile and prevent further damage from occurring. A partial denture is a removable oral appliance that attaches to remaining teeth to support dental function. They can also be made to attach to dental implants.
This device is made of gum-colored acrylic and natural-looking synthetic teeth that attach to a metal framework designed to fit snugly inside your mouth. Traditionally, partial dentures are secured in place with metal clasps that attach to adjacent teeth. Because of this, your remaining teeth should be strong and healthy enough to support such a restoration. If your other teeth have been compromised due to decay, Dr. Chrisman or Dr. Wyse may recommend replacing certain fillings or crafting dental crowns to cap your load-bearing teeth in order to create a solid foundation.
Creating Your Customized Device
Once your remaining teeth are adequately prepared, digital impressions are taken of your teeth and gums using advanced technology for use in fabricating your customized device. Your partial denture will either connect with invisible precision attachments and dental crowns or with tiny metal clasps that fit securely around your remaining teeth. If you have a healthy amount of jawbone tissue, Dr. Chrisman or Dr. Wyse may recommend dental implants to provide even more stability. Once your device has been fabricated by our trusted partner lab, your doctor will check to ensure it fits securely and comfortably.

Caring for Your Oral Appliance
To extend the longevity of your device, it is important to handle it with care. Dropping your denture or exposing it to hot temperatures could crack or warp the acrylic and bend the clasps, creating an uncomfortable fit. When the device is removed at night, you should keep it moist with either denture solution or water. You can keep your device clean by gently brushing it with a soft-bristled toothbrush. It is also important to visit your dentist every six months for a routine exam to have your device checked. With proper care, your partial denture can last for many years.
