Safe and Gentle Tooth Extractions
At Chrisman & Wyse in Bloomington, IL, we do everything in our power to protect your teeth and avoid the need for a tooth extraction. However, when a tooth becomes too damaged or decayed to save, we can perform safe and gentle extraction to restore the health of your smile. Drs. David Wyse and Jay Chrisman also offer a range of restorative options, including dental implants, to replace the extracted tooth and maintain your oral health. Our team is dedicated to providing personalized services and can find the optimal treatment method for your unique needs.
Why Are Extractions Necessary?
There are many reasons why Dr. Chrisman or Dr. Wyse may recommend removing a tooth, including:
- Decay or damage: If a tooth is too damaged or decayed to be repaired with a crown or other solution, extraction may be the best solution.
- Overcrowding: Some patients simply do not have sufficient room in their jaw for all their teeth. Some teeth may block others from erupting or put pressure on neighboring teeth, increasing the chance for other health issues.
- Severe infection: When an infection has spread to affect the jawbone tissue supporting the tooth, root canal therapy may not be an option.
- Impacted teeth: When teeth fail to erupt properly and become trapped in the gums or jaw, they can cause a range of oral health issues, including pain, swelling, and decay. Wisdom teeth often become impacted and require surgical removal.
Our team will always attempt to avoid the need for an extraction. However, in some cases, an extraction is the only way to maintain the health of your smile.
What to Expect during Your Procedure
Before your extraction procedure, we will take an x-ray of the area to precisely plan the treatment. For wisdom teeth, we may also perform a panoramic x-ray to assess their position in the jaw and their relation to your sinuses and nerves.
At Chrisman & Wyse, we only recommend tooth extractions when there is no other way to protect your oral health.
On the day of your procedure, we will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area. If you are concerned about the extraction or need multiple teeth removed, we can provide sedation to ensure your comfort. There are two main types of extractions: simple and surgical.
If the affected tooth is visible above the gumline, Dr. Chrisman or Dr. Wyse can perform a simple extraction by grasping the tooth with a pair of forceps and gently rocking it back and forth. This process loosens the tooth from the socket, after which your dentist can easily remove it.
Teeth that are impacted or broken below the gumline require a slightly more involved process. Your doctor will first make a small incision in the gums to access the tooth. Depending on the size and condition of the tooth, your dentist may need to remove it in pieces. Once the tooth is fully extracted, he can place sutures to help the gums heal.
