Full vs. Partial Dentures: Which Is the Best Option for Patients? By Dr. David Wyse on May 15, 2013

Bloomington DenturesPatients that are missing some or all of their natural teeth might want to consider getting either full or partial dentures. Bloomington cosmetic dentists Jay Chrisman and David Wyse offer both types of dentures at Chrisman & Wyse in Bloomington. Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. They are typically comprised of an acrylic resin, but may also be made of porcelain or metal for additional structural support. A great set of custom-fitted dentures will look just like real teeth, and no one will even be able to tell patients are wearing them. The experts at Chrisman & Wyse will work closely with patients to find the best denture solutions for each individual’s needs.

Complete Dentures

Complete (or full) dentures are usually recommended for patients who are already missing most or all their natural teeth. There are two types of complete dentures: “conventional” and “immediate.”  Conventional dentures are made after all teeth have been removed and gum tissue has begun to heal. These dentures are usually ready for placement eight to twelve weeks after tooth removal. While the patient waits for their conventional dentures to arrive, they will use a set of temporary, or immediate, dentures.

Immediate dentures are made in advance and placed in the mouth immediately after tooth removal. However, due to the shrinking of bones and gums during the healing period following tooth removal, immediate dentures generally don’t fit as well as conventional dentures and usually require adjustments. They are considered a great transitional denture to wear while waiting for a more permanent “conventional” set to arrive.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are a great option if patients still have some natural teeth intact, and they are also offered at Chrisman & Wyse in Bloomington. Partial dentures are removable replacement teeth that are attached to a gum-colored base. A metal framework anchors these partial dentures in place, preventing other teeth from moving and filling in unsightly gaps.

Post-Denture Tips & Care

Having dentures in the mouth might feel funny at first, but most patients get used to them in no time at all. Patients might have to practice pronouncing certain words as speech will be slightly affected when they first wear their dentures. However, these minor inconveniences will gradually fade over the course of a few weeks.

Dentures are relatively easy to clean and care for. It’s recommended that patients clean them with a soft bristled toothbrush once a day and soak them in a denture solution over-night. Be sure to only use denture-specific cleansers as regular toothpastes and solutions are too abrasive. The dentists at Chrisman & Wyse will go over more specific care instructions at the dental consultation.
